What to Wear and Not to Wear on a Job Interview

If you’re in the interview process, chances are that you know everything is intentional in how you present yourself and how jobs and organizations present themselves. The way you dress is an extension of who you are. However, it’s not always easy to know where to draw the line between professional and overly formal and fashion-forward, depending on the work culture you are entering.

What to Wear

Let’s start with what to wear. It’s always best to err on the side of professionalism. Even if you do your research and realize the organization you are considering is casual, keep it simple, classy, and neutral. Ultimately, when it comes to dressing for a job interview, aim for something both comfortable and smart - if you’re confident in what you wear, you might stand a bit taller, whereas if you feel uncomfortable and unlike yourself in your outfit, then you may be more distracted than helped by it.

It’s important to look professional and tidy, yet while still demonstrating your individual style. Consider a button-down shirt in a neutral color and pattern, dress pants, and close-toed shoes. Make sure that your overall look reflects positively on you as a potential employee.

What Not to Wear

When choosing an outfit for a job interview, some items should be avoided at all costs. These include ripped clothes, bright and distracting colors, open-toed shoes, revealing clothing, excessive accessories, shorts or skirts above the knee, athletic wear, hats and sneakers. Choose classic pieces and looks over something trendy or potentially risky - you want the focus to be on your skills and experience, and not on your clothing in an interview.

Always dress to impress at a job interview, but don't overdo it. Call a friend to give feedback on your outfit. Consider the company's culture, your personal style, and where the job is located when weighing what to wear. If you do this, you can be sure that you’re putting your best foot forward, showing the employer that you are someone the organization would benefit from hiring!
