5 Things to Include in Your Resume Cover Letter

If you’re in the job search, chances are that you’re writing a lot of resumes and cover letters. A well-crafted cover letter can give your application an edge in a pool of job applicants. Just like any good piece of writing, it does take work to get it right. To help you get started, here are five things to include in your cover letter:

  1. A greeting. Address your cover letter directly to the person who will be reviewing your application, not just "To whom it may concern." Explain how you learned about the job and why you're interested in it. This gives a personable, professional impression right off the bat!

  2. A compelling summary of your qualifications. This should be a simple recap of why you're qualified for the position, listing any skills, talents, and past work experiences that are relevant to the job description. You don’t have to go overboard here; just give a brief overview of why you’re suited for the position.

  3. An explanation of why you'd be a good fit for the job. Use specific examples of your skills and experience to demonstrate how you can contribute to the company or organization.

  4. A strong closing statement. End your cover letter with a strong closing statement that reiterates your interest in the job and encourages the hiring manager to contact you for an interview. Also, don’t forget to thank them for their time and consideration.

  5. Contact information. Make sure to include your contact information, including your email address and phone number, so that the hiring manager can easily get in touch with you.

A good cover letter allows you to put your best foot forward and make a positive impression on the hiring manager. It also gives you an opportunity to express your enthusiasm for the position and to make a strong case for why you are the best candidate for the job. So take the time and effort to make your cover letter the best that it can be. It’ll be worth it!
