4 Ways to Be In Awe of God

When is the last time you remember being “in awe” of something? For some it’s standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon, holding a newborn, watching the waves crash against the shore. What comes to mind for you? All of these create awe and wonder, but it’s important to look to the source of awe.

All throughout scripture, in the Old Testament and New Testament alike, there are stories of miraculous signs and wonders that point people to the living God and cause people to be in awe of who he is. Acts 2:43 says, “A deep sense of awe came over them all, and all the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.” It doesn’t say that miraculous signs and wonders caused people to be in awe; rather awe of God came before the miracle, which says something about the way people were living.

This uncommon life of people experiencing God together was and is marked by four practices early followers in Acts 2 were devoted to, and an invitation to followers today:

  1. The apostles’ teaching: Keep learning and growing in God’s Word. The more time you spend with God, the more his heart is revealed to you, and the more you can continue to reveal his heart to those around you.

  2. Fellowship with God and his people: Partner with the Spirit and others so that you can experience God in unique ways together.

  3. Share in meals together: Gather people around a table and expectantly look for the ways your relationships with God and others grow.

  4. Prayer: Practice hearing God’s voice and pursuing his presence through prayer. How can you enter into a rhythm of prayer with others, seeking him together?

When you and the people around you are devoted to teaching, fellowship, communion, and prayer together, the church will come alive, transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit, causing everyone to experience a deep sense of awe. How would living in awe of God transform the people around you?
