Who Is The Leader Of Your Life?
Imagine walking behind a leader who does not have your best in mind. They might walk off the path, they might cause you to trip and get hurt, or they might ask you to leave people behind, walking on alone.
However, you like this leader because the journey feels good. With them, you have a higher status or a better appearance. Everybody wishes they could walk with this leader. You don’t mind the troubles just yet because you like being seen with this leader.
This is what following after money is like.
The pursuit of money might lead you away from community and into destruction. It might cause you to get hurt. It’s enjoyable because you feel secure having money in the bank and designer shoes on your feet. But the pursuit of money will only cause you to “wander from the true faith and pierce [yourself] with many sorrows” (1 Timothy 6:9-10).
Jesus calls you into something more.
In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches that God will provide everything you need. Anything extra is riches that can be given away. When you walk behind Jesus as your leader, you can walk slowly, considering how he has provided for the birds and the flowers and how he will provide much more abundantly for you. You can give generously because God knows all your needs.
This leader wants your heart. He wants your contentment in him. He teaches that you cannot serve both God and money (Matthew 6:24), so you must choose.
Consider how you’re walking this week. Who is your leader?
