The 3 Best Hikes In Las Vegas
The 3 Best Hikes In Las Vegas | By Talley Hanson
I grew up in a rural area, and the outdoors were an everyday part of me. I spent countless days running barefoot and exploring every inch of land surrounding me. That upbringing, matched with my adventurous spirit, has led me to spend my weekends' hiking. There is something about breathing in the mountain air, feeling the textured ground under my feet, and witnessing an ever-changing landscape that truly refreshes my soul.
Hiking allows me to better experience one of my favorite attributes of God- the creator. God has created diversity in all things, which I experience just a fraction of by exploring the wilderness. The coloration of wet tree bark, grains and grooves found in rocks, and the conglomeration of green are just a few of the ways I can appreciate God's handiwork, knowing each time I step foot into the woods, I will see something I haven't seen before.
Hiking is also an intentional time of slowing down that allows me to spend time with God. It is easy for me to forget to see and hear God in the busyness of my routine, but stepping out onto a trail uniquely resets my mindset. Being immersed in His creation is just one way I am reminded how he cares for His people, has our best interests in mind, and encourages us to keep our eyes open to something new he might be up to.
As the Bible mentions, life isn't intended to be done alone, and neither is hiking! Bringing someone along for the ride is one of my favorite parts. I have had some of the deepest, honest moments with friends countless times while hiking. I believe God uses a simplistic activity such as hiking to expose authentic community and conversation. Perhaps the slowed-down, relaxed atmosphere that the mountains create allows these genuine moments to happen. I have not lived in Vegas long, but it is through some wonderful people who have invited me along on their adventures which has led me to compile a few of my favorite hikes. Here are three of my favorite hikes in Las Vegas:
#1 Pine Creek Canyon Trail
This trail is hands down my favorite hike in the Vegas area. It's not every day you see luscious grass, moss-covered rocks, and soothing shade in the desert. Nestled in the Scenic drive of Red Rock Canyon, Pine Creek is a refreshing 3.5-mile out and back hike that makes you feel like you've stepped out of the Vegas heat. Towards the middle of the hike, you will hear a decent-sized creek (depending on the time of year and rain levels) that makes for an excellent rest spot. Bringing along a picnic lunch is a must for this hike!
Take a break from the traffic cones and desert scenery to enjoy this Aspen and Bristlecone (as the name suggests) covered trail. This trail will refresh your soul with beautiful views of the Spring Mountains and a solid 20-degree decrease from the valley. You can make this hike as long or short as you would like, but it loops to be 6 miles long. Hiking is all about the experience for me, and I love this hike for that reason.
#3 Calico Basin and Red Spring Picnic Area
Being an outdoor lover and new mother, I'm constantly looking for places accommodating to children, and this spot is the best of both worlds! Whether you want something introductory or hardcore, you can have it all by exploring the Calico Basin area. I am a sucker for a good wildlife scene, which this area does a fabulous job presenting, as it is the oasis of Red Rock Canyon Conservation. I love a hike that has some climbing elements, and this hike has an endless bouldering supply. Once again, pack a picnic lunch, watch some climbers scale to great heights, and listen out for the ever-present hummingbirds as you enjoy the sea of the red landscape around you.
So, text a friend or reach out to someone new, pack a picnic lunch, try a new hike, and keep your eyes open to something God might be showing you!
