7 Things To Expect When Showing Up Well
When your life is transformed by Jesus, who you are changes! You become someone called to show up well everywhere, every day, to everyone, bringing people to God and bringing God to people!
Think of a place you frequent and the people in that place. What do you imagine and dream for them? What does God imagine and dream for them? What do you expect in your partnership with God for them?
Here are 7 things to expect when showing up well looking through the story of Luke 10 when Jesus sends out his disciples:
1. Expect to need help.
Jesus sent the disciples out in pairs. The Lord now chose seventy-two other disciples and sent them ahead in pairs (Luke 10:1). Perspective expands, and strength grows when people of God show up together. When you show up together, others experience the relationship Jesus has with and among his people!
2. Expect opportunity.
The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields (Luke 10:2). Life with God is abundant, and there is so much more for you and the people around you to experience with his presence and power. All it takes is showing up over and over again, expectant.
3. Expect encounter.
“Whenever you enter someone’s home, first say, ‘May God’s peace be on this house'" (Luke 10:5). Showing up is about encountering others, partnering with God to invite relationship with others!
4. Expect real change with spiritual impact.
Heal the sick, and tell them, ‘The Kingdom of God is near you now’ (Luke 10:9). Much of Jesus' life and ministry was meeting the human, physical needs of people and inviting them to eternal life with him. Be ready, always with God's presence and power, to meet the needs of people you encounter with presence, generosity, and healing!
5. Expect rejection.
"But if a town refuses to welcome you..." (Luke 10:10), and "Then he said to the disciples, “Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is rejecting me. And anyone who rejects me is rejecting God, who sent me” (Luke 10:16). No one likes rejection. But, what could you be missing out on, and who could you miss showing up as if you're only avoiding rejection?
6. Expect acceptance.
"Then he said to the disciples, “Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is rejecting me" (Luke 10:16). Remember, the harvest is plentiful. If you aren't having encounters, ask questions about how you're showing up, and what you're praying for.
7. Expect joy.
"But don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven" (Luke 10:20). Joy is in the partnership God invites you into, not in the experience or the outcome. Showing up well in partnership with God means joy shows up in and with you because God's presence is always with you!
