3 Ways To Get Curious About Friendship

Friendships get better when people engage one another like explorers, always curious. Think about the people in your life and how you got to know your friends. Chances are they piqued your curiosity, which led to exchanging questions, stories, and experiences. So, why do people tend to change the rules when it comes to knowing God as a friend?

Take a look at John 1:35-39! "The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, "Look! There is the Lamb of God!" When John's two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus. Jesus looked around and saw them following. "What do you want?" he asked them. They replied, "Rabbi" (which means "Teacher"), "where are you staying?" "Come and see," he said. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day."

Of course, one conversation would not be it, but Jesus piqued people's curiosity and kept their curiosity alive! Following Jesus is about being curious about who He is and wanting to know Him more and more.

If all meaningful relationships develop in the direction of the questions asked, think about all the relationships across your life - family, friends, neighbors, coworkers. Which friendships have formed from curiosity, and which ones are growing because of the kinds of questions you ask?

Asking open-ended questions creates space for the conversation to go beyond assumption, inviting people to share stories of value, personal experience, and unique perspectives! So, try asking these kinds of questions and expect better friendships!

  1. Tell me more about…?

  2. How did you experience…?

  3. What was important for you about…?

In growing your friendship with God, try these to stir up your curiosity!

1. Read a few chapters of the life of Jesus, exploring Jesus as a person. Read the gospel of John, and ask Jesus to help you know Him.

2. Discover Jesus together with others in a Discovery Bible Study. Be curious about what He has to say!
