New Week's Resolution | January 14, 2024 | Saying No

Do you ever find yourself being overwhelmed by the expectations placed on you, whether it comes from family and friends, from the workplace, or even from yourself? When expectation comes from all different directions, it leads to exhaustion. In John 17:4, Jesus says, “I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.” Jesus’ invitation to you is to discover your unique contribution in his direction, which becomes clearer when you learn to say no in order to say yes to the better thing. Every choice is a chance to encounter and partner with God, moving towards more meaningful and sustainable days.

KEY VERSES

  • John 17:3 NLT: 3 And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.

  • John 17:4 NLT: 4 I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.

  • Mark 1:35-39 NLT: 35 Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an isolated place to pray. 36 Later Simon and the others went out to find him. 37 When they found him, they said, “Everyone is looking for you.” 38 But Jesus replied, “We must go on to other towns as well, and I will preach to them, too. That is why I came.” 39 So he traveled throughout the region of Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and casting out demons.

  • Mark 3:31-33 NLT: 31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him. They stood outside and sent word for him to come out and talk with them. 32 There was a crowd sitting around Jesus, and someone said, “Your mother and your brothers are outside asking for you.” 33 Jesus replied, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?”

  • Mark 6:45-46 NLT: 45 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and head across the lake to Bethsaida, while he sent the people home. 46 After telling everyone good-bye, he went up into the hills by himself to pray.

  • Mark 7:17 NLT: 17 Then Jesus went into a house to get away from the crowd, and his disciples asked him what he meant by the parable he had just used.

  • Mark 9:30-31 NLT: 30 Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn’t want anyone to know he was there, 31 for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples and teach them. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies. He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the dead.”

HEARING WHAT GOD IS SAYING

One of the best ways to hear what God is saying right now is to look at what He has said in the Bible with a few friends. Discovery Bible Study is an easy-to-use way to hear from God, make good changes in our lives, and share with others what God is up to. Grab some friends, pick a verse or story from above and dive in deeper to this week’s message.

  • What is causing stress for our neighbors and people around us?
  • What can we as individuals or as a group do to help?

  • Have someone retell the story from your previous meeting.
  • Did you live out your response from last week?
  • Did you tell anyone else about the story from last week?

Discovering What God Is Saying

+ Read and Retell the Bible Story

  • One person reads the story out loud to the group.
  • Someone else in the group retells the story in their own words as they remember it, and others fill in what’s missing.

+ Read and Look

  • Read the passage again (different version if possible)
  • What does this passage say about God, Jesus, or His plan?

+ Read and Look Again

  • Have 1-2 more people retell the story as if they were telling a neighbor outside their home.
  • What does this passage say about people in general?

Doing What God Is Saying

+ Consider

  • What in me needs to change to better DO what God is showing me today?
  • How will you respond to/obey this passage in a tangible, perhaps even costly ways in the next 47 hours?
  • Have someone record these for prayer time, and for the beginning of the next meeting.

Sharing what God is saying

+ Praying Together

  • Take prayer requests
  • Pray together

  • Who in your life needs to hear this story?
  • Who could you invite to study the Bible like this?
