Better Friends | Feb. 20, 2022 | Correction

Doesn't it feel great to be told you were wrong? Nobody likes to be corrected, but good friends offer healthy correction because they know better things are ahead. The Bible is full of examples of how Jesus offers healthy correction to His friends. His correction always made sure that the relationship was more important than the problem they were facing and helped his friends become better. He wants to do the same thing for you! He wants to meet you where you are broken and walk with you to somewhere better.

KEY VERSES

  • Luke 5:1-3 NLT- One day as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the word of God. 2 He noticed two empty boats at the water’s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there.

  • Luke 5:10b-11 NLT- Jesus replied to Simon, “Don’t be afraid! From now on you’ll be fishing for people!” 11 And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.

  • John 13:33-37 NLT- 33 Dear children, I will be with you only a little longer. And as I told the Jewish leaders, you will search for me, but you can’t come where I am going. 34 So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. 35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

36 Simon Peter asked, “Lord, where are you going?”

And Jesus replied, “You can’t go with me now, but you will follow me later
37 “But why can’t I come now, Lord?” he asked. “I’m ready to die for you.”

  • John 13:38 NLT- 38 Jesus answered, “Die for me? I tell you the truth, Peter—before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.

  • Luke 22:60-62 NLT- 60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.

61 At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Suddenly, the Lord’s words flashed through Peter’s mind… 62 And Peter left the courtyard,

    weeping bitterly.

  • John 21:3-7 NLT- 3 Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.”

“We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night.

4 At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. 5 He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?”

    “No,” they replied.

6 Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.

7 Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, “It’s the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had stripped for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore.

  • John 21:12a NLT- 12 “Now come and have some breakfast!” Jesus said.

  • John 21:17d,19b NLT- “Then feed my sheep. Then Jesus told him, “Follow me.”

HEARING WHAT GOD IS SAYING

One of the best ways to hear what God is saying right now is to look at what He has said in the Bible with a few friends. Discovery Bible Study is an easy-to-use way to hear from God, make good changes in our lives, and share with others what God is up to. Grab some friends, pick a verse or story from above and dive in deeper to this week’s message.

Recap

+ Reconnect

To begin the study, each person answers these questions:

  • What are you thankful for?
