Best of Both | June 11, 2023 | Plans and Flexibility

If you had to pick one, would you choose planning or flexibility? You should plan because it sets you in a direction and helps you prioritize and achieve goals, but you shouldn't only plan because it can make you miss opportunities and overthink! And you should be flexible because new possibilities emerge, but you shouldn't only be flexible because you can be unprepared for opportunities!

Living with the best of both planning and flexibility is about partnering with God to make your life all he wants for you. This message looks through the story of Paul and through the Book of Proverbs to see that God doesn't intend for you to choose between planning for the best and being flexible for the best, but rather choosing the best of both! Make flexible plans with God, with God's people, and on the move. This week, read through Psalm 37:3-7 and make that your prayer as you seek to live wisely!

KEY VERSES

  • Acts 9:15 NLT - 15 But the Lord said, “Go, for Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel.

  • Acts 26:15-18 NLT - 15 “‘Who are you, lord?’ I asked.“And the Lord replied, ‘I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting. 16 Now get to your feet! For I have appeared to you to appoint you as my servant and witness. Tell people that you have seen me, and tell them what I will show you in the future. 17 And I will rescue you from both your own people and the Gentiles. Yes, I am sending you to the Gentiles 18 to open their eyes, so they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and be given a place among God’s people, who are set apart by faith in me.’

  • Ephesians 2:1-4 NLT - 1 Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. 2 You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. 3 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else. 4 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much,

  • Proverbs 16:1 NLT - 1 We can make our own plans, but the Lord gives the right answer.

  • Proverbs 19:21 NLT - 21 You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail.

They went down to the seaport of Seleucia and then sailed for the island of Cyprus.

  • Acts 15:37-41 NLT -37 Barnabas agreed and wanted to take along John Mark. 38 But Paul disagreed strongly, since John Mark had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in their work. 39 Their disagreement was so sharp that they separated. Barnabas took John Mark with him and sailed for Cyprus. 40 Paul chose Silas, and as he left, the believers entrusted him to the Lord’s gracious care. 41 Then he traveled throughout Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches there.

  • Proverbs 37:3-7 NLT - 3 Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. 4 Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. 5 Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you. 6 He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun. 7 Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes.
