Are You There? | September 02, 2023 | Yielding

What is the most challenging part of prayer for you? In the P.R.A.Y. model, yield is the last part but not the least important. Yielding means to surrender or submit. Isn’t it easier to ask for things instead of listening to what other people are saying? In order to yield, you are invited to listen. How do you listen to God in prayer?

The story of Samuel in 1 Samuel 3 teaches people to be available, attentive, and expectant in listening to God’s voice as he speaks through his word. Mark Batterson says, “Scripture is God’s way of initiating a conversation: prayer is our response. The paradigm shift happens when you realize that the Bible was not meant to be read through; the Bible was meant to be prayed through.” This week, pray through scripture with Lectio Divina, a prayer practice to read, reflect, respond, and rest.

KEY VERSES

  • Matthew 6:9-13 NLT -9 Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. 10 May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today the food we need, 12 and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. 13 And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.

  • 1 Samuel 3:1-10 NLT -1 Meanwhile, the boy Samuel served the Lord by assisting Eli. Now, in those days, messages from the Lord were very rare, and visions were quite uncommon. 2 One night, Eli, who was almost blind by now, had gone to bed. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was sleeping in the Tabernacle near the Ark of God. 4 Suddenly, the Lord called out, “Samuel!” ”Yes?” Samuel replied. “What is it?” 5 He got up and ran to Eli. “Here I am. Did you call me?”“I didn’t call you,” Eli replied. “Go back to bed.” So he did. 6 Then the Lord called out again, “Samuel!”Again, Samuel got up and went to Eli. “Here I am. Did you call me?”“I didn’t call you, my son,” Eli said. “Go back to bed.” 7 Samuel did not yet know the Lord because he had never had a message from the Lord before. 8 So the Lord called a third time, and once more, Samuel got up and went to Eli. “Here I am. Did you call me?”Then Eli realized it was the Lord who was calling the boy. 9 So he said to Samuel, “Go and lie down again, and if someone calls again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went back to bed. 10 And the Lord came and called as before, “Samuel! Samuel!”And Samuel replied, “Speak, your servant is listening.”

  • John 10:27 NLT -27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

  • Matthew 6:6 MSG -6 “Here’s what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense his grace.

  • Hebrews 4:12 NLT -12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

HEARING WHAT GOD IS SAYING

One of the best ways to hear what God is saying right now is to look at what He has said in the Bible with a few friends. Discovery Bible Study is an easy-to-use way to hear from God, make good changes in our lives, and share with others what God is up to. Grab some friends, pick a verse or story from above and dive in deeper to this week’s message.

Recap
