What I'm Learning About Hearing God's Voice
What I’m Learning About Hearing God’s Voice | By: Nayomi Gibson
I grew up in the church and wasn’t a stranger to God. As a teenager living in Las Vegas, it’s easy to be influenced and distracted by my surroundings. In 2020, my parents split up, the world was affected by Covid, and money was tight for everyone. Life was going to be tough for a while, and I stopped communicating with God, which caused me to spiral downward.
It felt like there was no way out of my circumstances. All signs of his presence seemed to cease. I was tired of being a good student, a good friend, and a good daughter. That was when my parents stepped in early this year and reminded me of who I am - an ambitious, bright student who loves Jesus more than anything. That’s when I decided to find better habits spiritually and academically.
It was through my parents that I heard God’s voice drawing me back to him. Learning how to hear God’s voice helps me call out to him and build meaningful relationships with him and the people in my life. I talk with him just as I would with any of my friends.
A great way to make a habit of hearing God’s voice and using your own voice to call out to him is through spending time in Scripture. Meditating on his word daily is an invitation to become aware of God’s presence exactly where you are. This week, start your mornings with Psalm 5 (NLT). What is God saying to you through this psalm and how are you responding?
Throughout Scripture, Jesus calls us into a relationship with him, calling us to live better. Ever since God intervened on my behalf, I’ve learned that God can and will communicate with me in powerful, personal ways. He’s spoken to me through music, family, friends, and his Word. There is absolutely no limit to the ways he can and will speak to you.
Lately, everything has circled back to His love and character. God has wrapped me close to Him and has been merciful in every detail of my life. Even in the midst of my anxiety, I’m learning to trust Him in my life, wherever He leads me.
