The Practice Of Arrival
Living a life of hospitality is about genuine encounter with God and with others. It's about making space for all people and living at a sustainable pace to show up at all places with an unhurried presence.
Life often seems like a domino effect of thing after thing after thing. It's easy to mindlessly go through the motions of meetings, running errands, prepping dinner, work, school, hobbies, relationships, etc. Do you notice how you might be going place to place only to never fully arrive at each destination? In other words, when you're "here," are you really here? Because even though your mind can wander a million miles an hour to a million other directions, you can only be one place at one time. Fully arriving is a practice of unhurried presence.
Arriving is fully entering emotional, physical, and spiritual space. Arrival is awakening to the reality around you with your attention and intention. This week, as you have opportunities to go from place to place, try this:
Breathe: Take 3 deep breaths. Be intentional about how deepening your breath affects your body and mind. If you have time, do a breath prayer. Inhale and exhale a truth about God. Like this:
Inhale: Jesus
Exhale: Sustain me
Notice: What comes to mind? What's distracting you? Sometimes, it's more helpful to acknowledge the reality of your cluttered mind to become fully present with yourself. Invite God to help sort through the clutter.
Release: Now that you've taken a moment to breathe and notice your thoughts and emotions, hopefully, you feel more grounded in and connected to yourself and God. Receive the good of God with gratitude, and let gratitude carry you into your next place.
Breathe, notice, release. This slight pause and pivot throughout your day can be all it takes to make a positive difference in your life and the lives of others! May your life be full of fully arriving in God's unhurried presence, so that others may experience the same.
