Disciples: Being & Making

Have you ever felt like your days are a blur of activities, leaving you wondering if you're truly living out God's purpose for your life? Slow down and consider how you can cultivate a more intentional and fulfilling walk with Jesus.

To be a disciple is to be a pupil of another, taking on their way of life. Jesus was a Rabbi, which means "teacher," and his disciples learned from him. They adopted his teachings and lifestyle, embodying his way of life in their daily actions.

In Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus says, "I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

These words are the guiding principle for how followers of Jesus should live. His instructions have two parts: be a disciple who learns from Jesus, going out in his name, and make disciples. Teach others who Jesus is, inviting them to be his students, too. To completely obey, a Jesus-follower needs to do both things: be a disciple and make disciples.

What habits or rhythms in your life need to change in order to obey this instruction completely? Do you feel more challenged to be Jesus' disciple or to invite others into discipleship with him?

Practical Ways to Embrace Your Mission:

  1. Being a Disciple Means Adopting Jesus' Way of Life - Being a disciple means embracing the lifestyle and teachings of Jesus, not just gaining knowledge. As Jesus' disciples, you are called to embody his teachings in your daily life.

  2. The Great Commission - Jesus' words in Matthew 28:18-20 guide how we should live. You are to be a disciple who learns from Jesus and makes disciples by teaching others about him, inviting them to follow his ways.

  3. Creating a Rule of Life - To fully obey Jesus, you must be both a disciple and a disciple-maker. Reflect on the habits or rhythms that need to change in your life to align with this calling. Create a Rule of Life that invites God into your daily habits, embodying discipleship and inviting others to do the same.
